Notes
Recorded during the Wind & Wuthering sessions, the three songs that comprise the Spot the Pigeon ep foreshadow the bland and generic quality of the band's following album, And Then There Were Three. "Match of the Day," the opener, bridges the gap between the sounds of Wind & Wuthering and its follow-up. A short, solid pop tune, it features Collins' strong drum and percussion work. The second cut, "Pigeons," is seemingly lifeless, cookie-cutter pop, while the closing song, "Inside and Out," returns to the sounds of the opening track. In addition, a pleasant breeze of early Genesis (Trespass in particular) and Anthony Phillips' The Geese & the Ghost permeate the music and lyrics. Produced by Genesis and David Hentschel (who had joined the Genesis team on A Trick of the Tail), Spot the Pigeon has never been a popular or even very accessible release in the U.S. Of course, there's a reason for this: It simply isn't very exciting. As a result, it's never been in high demand. The album basically marked the end of Genesis' progressive era and hinted at the radio-friendly pop structures that would dominate the music on the band's subsequent albums. -- David Ross Smith (allmusic.com)
